If you are a UK final year student living within College accommodation, you may leave the books in a bag in your college bedroom, clearly labeled ‘Library Books.’ (Some colleges may request you take them to a central location, please follow local college requests).

Book-drop at Bill Bryson Library

We have opened a book-drop service for the return of any Durham University Library books to Bill Bryson Library. Users are able to return books by posting them through the letterbox located to the left of the main entrance of Bill Bryson Library. Visit our news pages for more information.

Free postal return service

We are offering a free postal returns service to UK-based final year students, allowing books to be returned to the Library by those who are not able to access campus in the current situation. We will be emailing all final year students with library books to let them know what to do; this service will be available until the end of July.

Staff and students who have not finished their course of study can return their library books when back on campus.

Returning students continuing current course

Students returning to continue their course next year do not need to return their library books over the summer. You can continue to renew your items online here:

Returning students starting a new course
Given the current circumstances, students who are continuing with the University for a different course in 2020/21 do not need to return their library books over the summer. Although the due date on your books will remain unchanged as will the expiry date on your library record, no fines will be charged on these items. When you receive confirmation of your enrollment on your new course you will be able to access your record online and renew the books.

Please be aware that access to e-resources is controlled by the CIS department, if you would like to apply for an extension of access to any IT facilities please contact the service desk at or online Full details of changes to your IT account during this period can be found online at
